Restoration of the China House

2026-2028

Once the necessary studies have been carried out by Bureau Origin on behalf of the Buildings Agency, specifications drawn up, a call for tenders issued and a permit obtained, the restoration work can begin in 2026 and be completed in 2028. Once this work is complete, this extraordinary building will be open to the public, who will be able to enjoy high-quality exhibitions and activities highlighting the cultural and artistic riches of Asian countries.

Restoration of the China House Annex

2025-2026

Restoration of the China House annex, which does not show any serious deterioration. An inspection of the roofs, electrical system and security system will enable a rapid assessment of the work to be done. This work could be completed before the end of 2026, enabling the installation of offices, reception areas for specific audiences (private and institutional partners, media) and visitor groups (by appointment). The advantage of this access is that it will allow visitors to follow the restoration work on the China House itself on site.

Restoration of model of the China House

2025-2026

© Alexandre Christiaens

After the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, when architect Alexandre Marcel was commissioned to design and build the China House, its annex and the Japanese Tower, he had craftsmen from Shanghai build a 1/10 scale model of the palace. This wooden model, which features numerous carved details, was luckily found in the annex and stored for a long time at the Museum of Art and History in pieces. Thanks to the collaboration of the Museum of Art and History, the King Baudouin Foundation and the Jonckheere Fund, the restoration of this model began in November 2024 and was completed in July 2025. The model is on display at the Museum of Art and History from 14 October 2025.
